EA LESSON #4: Fitness Coaching vs Personal Training

Updated: Jan 31, 2023

A fitness/prep coach and a personal trainer are not the same profession.

A fitness coach or a prep coach, customarily, will have a certification in coaching, counseling, psychology, or another health-related field. A fitness coach is often more interested in the mental and emotional aspects of fitness, and is generally responsible for providing nutritional guidance, designing the workout programs, creating supplement protocols all as part of a systematic coaching process focused specifically on getting you to your ultimate goal; whether that be stepping on stage or hitting a significant weight loss or body transformation target.

The main difference between fitness coaches and personal trainers is that fitness coaches don't train people while they're working out. On the flip side, a personal trainer works one-on-one with clients in the gym and are primarily focused on teaching proper movement execution and helping you develop proper exercise technique, while making sure each rep, and each set is being performed at the appropriate intensity level necessary for you to progress toward your goals. A personal trainer focuses more on short term and performance goals like building strength, speed, agility, power, mobility and other various aspects of fitness. Personal trainers can also work with clients who need help with correcting muscle imbalances, or recovering from an injury or a surgery.

At Enlightened Athletics Training Academy we offer the best of both worlds as we specialize in Fitness and Prep Coaching but also offer Personal Training in the form of Small Group Training Sessions and One-On-One Private Training Sessions.

A few training sessions with one of our expert personal trainers might be right for you if:

  1. You have specific body parts you want bring up and improve

  2. You have trouble areas you want more focus on

  3. You want to optimize your exercise form and movement execution

  4. You want to dial in your exercise selection and sequencing to maximize your results

  5. You have nagging pain or a postural issue that can be addressed through corrective and clinical exercise
